POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title:  Senior Systems Administrator

Classification:  Comparable Staff

Responsible To:  Director, Information & Communications Technology

Responsible For:  The holder of this position is responsible for technical design, planning, implementation and the highest level of performance tuning and recovery procedures for mission critical university systems.


Salary Range:  Grade 3 Comparable Staff: ($39,114pa-$49,537pa)

RESPONSIBILITIES 

PERFORMANCE MEASURES

  • Provides timely and rapid responses to the user (staff and students) requests for assistance.
  • Reduce operational risk and improve availability of the server infrastructure by ensuring system access, monitoring, control, evaluation and documentation practices are maintained and adhered to.
  • Installs and configures systems software.
  • Installs and maintains university management systems
  • Provides systems technical support and assistance monitor’s systems operations.
  • Develops and maintains system documentation.
  • Participates in the planning and development of procedures for the operation of servers and systems.
  • Implements, monitors and improves system security configurations.
  • Evaluate new system hardware and software solutions and monitor the market for emerging technology

Critical issues Attend Immediately Normal issues – Within 24 hours.

Duties are performed according to instruction, promptly and efficiently.

Ability to work independently.

Give frank and honest feedback / advice.

Raise and work through challenging issues and seek alternatives.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Minimum Qualifications/Experience:

  • Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems
  • Three years of work experience in complex systems design, programming and systems software and support
  • Knowledge of multi-user operating systems, protocols, architectures, design and equipment configuration
  • Knowledge of the current and developing information technology services requirements in a large educational institution
  • Possess working knowledge of network and system administration and experience with the following: Windows Operating Systems, Virtual Machine Services, Active Directory, Linux, Mac OS, and TCP/IP.
  • Possess experience with web server (IIS and Apache) and database (MS SQL)
  • Possess familiarity with the Internet and generally available Internet services such asSSH,FTP,HTTP,SMTP, DHCPandDNS
 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to plan, organize and document complex system design activities and to configure systems to be consistent with institutional policies / procedures
  • Ability to communicate technical / complex information both verbally and in writing
  • Ability in establishment and maintain cooperation, understanding, trust and credibility
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently and respond to emergency situations effectively
